…Since the 17th century, the nobility and upper bourgeoisie had salons as a place of social interaction, but for the increasingly powerful middle and small bourgeoisie, especially active intellectuals, cafés became the perfect place to debate politics and art and refine new ideas. The Palais Royal was home to many well-known cafés, one of which, the Café de Foy, was the meeting place of the Jacobin Club. It is famous for the anecdote that on July 12, 1789, upon hearing the news of Necker's dismissal, Camille Desmoulins jumped onto a table and shouted, "Leave the café and start a revolution!" After the revolution, the direct relationship between cafés and politics faded, and the base of political and social movements against bourgeois society was transferred to the taverns, which were places of public discussion. …
