Oka Seibei

Year of birth: Unknown. A writer of old joruri from the early Edo period. His given name was Shigetoshi. In "Edo tales from returning to his hometown" (1687), it is written that "Kanpei-tsukuri Seibei was born with natural talent and a good memory, and he memorized the Taiheiki, Seisuiki, and Tokagami by heart," and that he composed Kanpei joruri for Sakurai Tanba Shojo. There are currently ten original works bearing Oka Seibei's name, including "Nishikido Kassen," "Uji no Himekiri," and "Raikou Tokumokuron." He was one of the earliest joruri writers to make a name for himself, and he created stories of heroism that were well suited to the spirit of early Edo, leading Kanpei joruri to flourish. <References> "Kanpei joruri original collection," 3 volumes

江戸前期の古浄瑠璃作者。名は重俊。『故郷帰の江戸咄』(1687)には,「金平作りの清兵衛は,生れつき才発にして物覚えつよく,太平記,盛衰記, 東鑑などをそらにおぼえ」とあり,桜井丹波少掾の金平浄瑠璃を作ったと記されている。岡清兵衛の名前のある正本は,「にしきど合戦」「うぢのひめきり」「頼光跡目論」など10種が現存している。浄瑠璃作者として最も早くその名をあらわし,草創期の江戸の気風によく合った武勇物を作り,金平浄瑠璃を隆盛に導いた。<参考文献>『金平浄瑠璃正本集』全3巻
