Tsukiyotake (Lampteromyces japonicus)

Tsukiyotake (Lampteromyces japonicus)
Basidiomycetes, order Acarinales, family Tricholomataceae. It grows on dead beech trees or maple trunks in summer and autumn. When a fresh specimen is viewed in the dark, the underside of the cap will glow. The cap is initially spherical, but as it grows it becomes semicircular or kidney-shaped, with many overlapping leaves. It is 6-23 cm in diameter, and the surface of the cap is initially orange-yellow or cinnamon-colored, then dark brown or dark purple. The gills are yellow and then white. The spore print is white. This mushroom is similar in shape to oyster mushrooms and mukitake mushrooms, and in color to shiitake mushrooms, so there are many cases of severe poisoning if eaten by mistake. Tsukiyotake is characterized by a protuberance between the gills on the underside of the cap and the stalk, and by the fact that black tissue can be seen in a spotted pattern in the center of the stalk when it is torn apart. It is endemic to Japan and is found throughout the country.
