Jitterbug is a type of dance for young people that originated in the United States. Jitterbugs originated in the southern United States and were popular among black people in Harlem, New York, around the 1910s. They were then spread around the world by American soldiers during World War II, and were introduced to Japan after the war, where they were translated into Japanese and became jitterbugs. Dancers do not join forces in pairs, and dance to music that includes syncopations such as foxtrots, swings, jive, and jumps in 4/4 time. It is characterized by an unconventional, acrobatic, and intense dance style, but later it became a more formal social dance. Jitter means to shake the body nervously. Bug means insect, and jitterbug was originally a slang word for "drunkard." [Kuniko Yui] Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
