Shofu refers to the haiku style of the Shomon school led by Basho, but it is also commonly used in haiku history to refer to the haiku style of the period following the Teimon and Danrin periods. Shofu is certainly different from Teimonfu (Teimon haiku) and Danrinfu (Danrin haiku), and it is acknowledged that it qualitatively represents the haiku style of the Genroku period (1688-1704), but it is not appropriate to say that the general haiku style was led by Basho. For example, at the time the representative Shomon anthology Sarumino (1691) was published, the influence of the Shomon school was only just over 10% of the haiku world, and the number of publications was commensurate with that.
