Gielgud, Sir John

Japanese: ギールグッド(英語表記)Gielgud, Sir John
Gielgud, Sir John
Born: April 14, 1904, London
[Died] May 21, 2000. British actor and director from Aylesbury. Full name Sir Arthur John Gielgud. After graduating from Westminster School and the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, he made his debut in a minor role in Henry V at the Old Vic in 1921. He subsequently appeared in many of William Shakespeare's plays, including King Lear and The Tempest, and was best known for his role as Hamlet. He was also active on radio and television, and in films such as Arthur (1981), for which he won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor, The Elephant Man (1980), and Chariots of Fire (1981). He wrote an autobiography, "Early Stages" (1938), and "Stage Directions" (1963), which could be considered a practical theory of directing. He also wrote a record of his acting, "John Gielgud's Hamlet" (1937) by Rosamond Gilder, and a record of his directing, "Letters from an Actor" (1966) by William Redfield. The latter is a record of letters written by the author to a friend after he played Guildenstern in Gielgud's production of Hamlet (1964). He was knighted in 1953. He was awarded the Praemium Imperiale in 1994.
