A city in the Lazio region in central Italy. It sits on a hill 31 km east of Rome, overlooking the Roman plain. Population 55,030 (1990). A scenic spot in the valley of the Aniene River, a tributary of the Tiber River, it has been a popular summer resort since ancient times. It is home to the remains of Emperor Hadrian's villa, said to be the most luxurious villa of the Roman Empire, as well as the 16th century villa of the Este family and the 19th century villa of Pope Gregory XVI.
