According to the Law of Moses, the infant Jesus is presented by his parents to the temple in Jerusalem on the 40th day after his birth. This scene is also called the "ceremony of Mary's purification," and two pigeons are sacrificed. At the same time, an old man named Simeon, who had received a revelation from the Holy Spirit, was in the temple. He immediately recognized that the infant was the Messiah sent by the Lord, and took Jesus in his arms. Anna, an old prophet, also approached and praised the infant.

モーセの律法に従って，幼子イエスが生誕後40日目に両親に連れられエルサレムの神殿に奉献される場面。《ルカによる福音書》2章22～39節に記される。この場面は〈マリアの潔めの式〉とも呼ばれ，イエバトのひな2羽が犠牲にささげられる。また，このとき神殿には聖霊の示しを受けているシメオンSimeonという名の老人がいたが，この幼子が主のつかわす救世主(メシア)であることを即座に理解し，イエスを腕に抱く。老預言者アンナもまた近寄ってきて幼子をたたえる。
