Trigonia

Japanese:
Trigonia

Representative genus of the Trigonia family of the Bivalve class of the Mollusca phylum. Generally refers to all species in this family. The shell is triangular and thick, with an inner layer made of nacre. It is also called the Triangular Shell due to the shell's external shape. It has distinctive radial teeth on the right shell. The shell surface is divided into three parts, and each part often has strong ribs (linear elevations) and warts. It appeared in the middle Triassic period of the Mesozoic era, and flourished throughout the Mesozoic era. In the narrow sense, the genus Trigonia is limited to species from the Jurassic period.

Neotrigonia , found on the coast of South Australia, is the only extant genus and a good example of a relict species. Based on comparison with extant species and the occurrence of fossils, it is believed that many of the fossil species lived underground in the sandy bottom of shallow seas facing the warm open ocean. Due to its wide distribution and short survival period of the genus, it is one of the important standard stones of the Mesozoic era. Many genera and species, including Steinmanella , are also found in the marine Cretaceous of Japan.
