Tijuana - Tijuana (English spelling)

Tijuana - Tijuana (English spelling)

A tourist city in Baja California, in the northwest of Mexico. It is located at the base of the California Peninsula, along the border with the United States. Population 1, 148,681 (2000). Route 1 runs south along the peninsula, and Route 2 leads to the state capital, Mexicali, making it well-connected. It is only about 20 km from San Diego, California. This makes it a gateway for American tourists from California, and an entertainment district has developed. Bullfighting, jai alai, horse racing, and dog racing are popular, and souvenirs include Mexican leather products, sombreros, and folk crafts. Until the 1950s, it was the center of the surrounding irrigated agricultural region with a population of less than 60,000, but the population has rapidly increased due to the development of food processing and tourism.
