American craftsman. Born in New York as the son of Charles L. Tiffany (Charles Lewis T.) (1812-1902), founder of the famous jewelry store Tiffany & Co., he initially aspired to be a painter and traveled around Europe, including France, but from the late 1870s he developed an interest in crafts and was active in a variety of fields, including ceramics, metalwork, jewelry, furniture, interior design, and dyeing and weaving. He is particularly famous for his Art Nouveau glasswork, and his vases and lampshades made from soft, rainbow-colored, lustrous glass that he himself named "Fabrile glass" are widely known as Tiffany glass. He also created stained glass based on designs by Bonnard, Vuillard, and Toulouse-Lautrec.
