Quiroga, Horacio
Born: December 31, 1878, Sarthe
[Died] February 19, 1937. Buenos Aires. Uruguayan novelist. Influenced by the "Modernist" and EA Pau, he began writing poetry and short stories. He joined an expedition to the Misiones region in northeastern Argentina, and spent most of his life thereafter in this tropical frontier. He had a strong interest in people in extreme situations and abnormal environments, and published many short stories filled with dramatic tension while working in the fields, portraying people who fight, live, and are defeated by the overwhelming forces of nature that he found in this frontier. In his later years, he suffered from cancer and committed suicide in solitude. His representative works include Cuentos de amor, de locura y de muerte (1917), El salvaje (The Wild Man) (20), Anaconda (21), and Los desterrados (The Exiled Men) (26).
