A general term for lizards belonging to the order Squamata, family Skinks, subfamily Lygosominae, class Reptilia. More than 170 species of this subfamily Lygosominae are distributed throughout Asia, Africa, Australia, and North America. They are small, about 10 to 30 centimeters in length, with smooth body scales. Their bodies are cylindrical and slender, and in some cases the limbs have degenerated into fins. There are three genera and four species distributed in Japan, of which the lower eyelids of the Sakishima lizard Scincella boettgeri found in the Yaeyama Islands and the Tsushima lizard S. vandenburghi found on Tsushima Island are partly made up of transparent membranous scales called "windows." The Hemi-black Skink Ateuchosaurus pellopleurus is widely distributed throughout the Ryukyu Islands. It is a small species, about 12 centimeters in length.
