Sayajiro - Sayajiro

Japanese:
Sayajiro - Sayajiro

"Sayamichi" is also called "Saya-mawari". It was a side road on the Tokaido in the early modern period. It runs from Atsuta to Saya (Aisai City, Aichi Prefecture) via three post towns, Iwatsuka and Manba (both in Nagoya City) on the north shore of Ise Bay, and Kamori (Tsushima City, Aichi Prefecture), and from there it goes three ri down the Saya River, a tributary of the Kiso River, to Kuwana (Kuwana City, Mie Prefecture). The total distance is nine ri. Tokugawa Ieyasu also used it when he headed west for the Summer Siege of Osaka in April 1615 (Keicho 20), but it didn't become a regular highway until 1634 (Kan'ei 11). It was used by feudal lords, nobles, and commoners who disliked the seven-ri sea crossing between Atsuta and Kuwana, but the post station facilities were inferior to those on the main road. It was under the jurisdiction of the road magistrate. In 1868 (Meiji 1), Emperor Meiji used this road both for his trip to the east and back. In 1872, it was converted into a new road.
