A major tributary of the Congo River. It originates in the central Angola plateau and flows eastward, then northward, along the border between the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Angola, before turning northwest and joining the Congo River near Kwamouz. It is about 2,150 km long. It has been an important trade route since ancient times, and many African kingdoms, including the Kingdom of Kongo, were formed along the river basin.
