…Natori Yonosuke returned to Japan from Germany in 1932 and established the Nippon Kobo (Japan Workshop), where he practiced the methods of reportage photography he had learned in Germany with Kimura Ihei and Domon Ken, making a great contribution to paving the way for photojournalism in Japan. Meanwhile, in America, Jacob August Riis (1880), who photographed New York's slums and ran a campaign, and LW Hine, who appealed to society by photographing the horrible conditions in immigrant detention centers at the beginning of the 20th century, began to pave the way for their own documentary photography, and in the 1930s after the Great Depression, photographers who gathered under the guidance of RE Stryker to take publicity materials for the FSA (Farm Security Administration), such as W. Evans, D. Lang, and Arthur Rothstein, set out the basic direction of American documentary photography. Many photographers, including those who had emigrated from Germany, continued to engage in journalistic activities in Life, a weekly photo magazine launched in 1936. …

…名取洋之助は1932年にドイツから日本に帰り，〈日本工房〉を設立してドイツで体得したルポルタージュ･フォトの方法を木村伊兵衛，土門拳らとともに実践し，日本における報道写真の道を開くことに大きな貢献をした。　一方，アメリカにおいては，ニューヨークの貧民街を撮影してキャンペーンを行ったリースJacob August Riis(1880)や，20世紀の初めに移民収容所の悲惨な状況を撮影して社会に訴えたL.W.ハインなどが独自のドキュメンタリー･フォトの道を開きはじめ，特に大恐慌後の30年代に，R.E.ストライカーの指導のもと，FSA(Farm Security Administration＝農地保全管理局)広報資料撮影のために集まった写真家たち，すなわち，W.エバンズ，D.ラング，ロスタインArthur Rothsteinらは，アメリカのドキュメンタリー･フォトの基本的な方向を打ち出したといえる。36年に創刊された《ライフ》その他の写真週刊誌では，ドイツから移住した写真家たちなども含め，多くの写真家によりジャーナリスティックな活動が続けられた。…
