In the early days of the Republic of China, from 1915 to 1916, President Yuan Shikai attempted to abolish the Republic and restore the monarchy, but failed after 83 days. Yuan Shikai renamed the 5th year of the Republic of China (1916) the first year of the Hongxian era, and essentially acted as emperor, but did not officially ascend to the throne. What sparked Yuan Shikai's ambition was Japan's Twenty-One Demands. In the spring of 1915, faced with a wide range of demands that concerned the survival of the nation, the patriotism of the Chinese people was greatly inflamed, and movements calling for a boycott of Japanese goods, the use of domestically produced goods, and contributions to save the country were launched all over the country.
