1255‐1308 Habsburg king of Germany. Reigned 1298-1308. Elected as rival king to Adolf of Nassau (1291-98), who sought to strengthen the family's power, he defeated and killed Adolf at Görheim. However, he also sought to expand the family's power. He fought and defeated the four electors of the Rhine (1301) and was recognized as king by Pope Boniface VIII (1303). He pursued the expansion of the family's territory into northeastern Germany and the creation of a hereditary Habsburg empire, but was assassinated by his nephew Johann Parricida, leaving it unfinished.
