Pegasus

It is a constellation that can be seen overhead, slightly to the south, on autumn evenings. The large quadrangle formed by the four stars is called the "Pegasus Quadrilateral" or "Autumn Quadrilateral" and is particularly conspicuous, with the star at the northeast corner belonging to Andromeda. In Greek mythology, when the hero Perseus defeated the monster Medusa, the winged winged horse Pegasus was born from the blood that splattered from her neck. In Japan, the Pegasus Quadrilateral is called "Masugata-boshi" (square star), and in some regions, the four stars of Andromeda, α (alpha), β (beta), γ (gamma), and δ (delta), are connected in a quadrilateral, and the whole is likened to a large ladle. When viewed through a small telescope, the globular cluster M15 at the tip of Pegasus' nose is not to be missed.

秋の宵にほとんど頭上やや南寄りのあたりに見える星座。4個の星が描く大きな四辺形は「ペガススの四辺形」または「秋の四角形」などとよばれ、とくによく目だつが、このうち北東の角の星はアンドロメダ座に属するものである。ギリシア神話では、勇者ペルセウスが女怪メドゥサを退治したとき、その首から飛び散った血の中から生まれ出た翼のある天馬（ペガソス）とされている。日本ではペガススの四辺形を「桝形星(ますがたぼし)」とよび、アンドロメダ座のα(アルファ)、β(ベータ)、γ(ガンマ)、δ(デルタ)の4個の星を四辺形に結び付け、全体を大きな柄杓(ひしゃく)に見立てている地方もある。小望遠鏡での見ものとしては、ペガススの鼻先にある球状星団M15が見逃せない。
