A state in northeastern India. It is surrounded by China, Bhutan, Myanmar, and Bangladesh. Most of the area is mountainous. The population is mostly Indo-Aryan Assamese people, as well as Tibeto-Burman minorities such as the Bodos, and most of them are concentrated in the Brahmaputra River and the Surma River valley in the south. The main products are tea, jute, rice, sugarcane, fruits, and timber. The industry is agricultural product processing and oil refinery, and the state has coal and petroleum reserves. It is said to be the first place in the world where upland rice was cultivated. The Ahom Kingdom flourished from the 13th to the 19th centuries. It became a British protectorate in 1826. It was repeatedly merged with and separated from Bengal, and in 1947 it became a state of India. In 1963, eastern Nagaland was separated, followed by Meghalaya, Manipur, and Tripura in 1972, Arunachal Pradesh in 1986, and Mizoram in 1987. The state capital is Dispur.
