Also known as portrait photography, portrait photography is the field of expression that developed earliest in the history of photography. In the 1850s, it gained popularity as an inexpensive way to create portraits, and portrait studios spread across the country. Many of the early portrait photographers were painters who had switched to portrait photography. In the narrow sense, portrait photography is a type of commercial photography (photographs taken in a studio), and follows the style of portrait photography, including wedding photographs and commemorative photographs. In the broad sense, portrait photography is included in portrait photography, and many of these are highly artistic, attempting to portray the model's character, or taken for news or advertising purposes.
