A newspaper published in Japan in which English is the primary language. Also called an English-language paper. The first was The Nagasaki Shipping List and Advertiser (published twice a week), which was launched in June 1861 (Bunkyu 1) by the Englishman A.W. Hansard for foreigners living in Nagasaki. It was also the first newspaper in Japan. After that, English-language newspapers were published one after another in Yokohama, Kobe, Tokyo, and other cities, but all of these were written by foreigners. In March 1897, Zumoto Motosada, with the support of Ito Hirobumi, launched the first English-language newspaper by a Japanese person, The Japan Times.
