A pro-government political party formed in 1882 by Fukuchi Genichiro, Maruyama Sakura and others to oppose the Liberal Party and the Progressive Party. Officially known as the Constitutional Imperial Party, it advocated the Imperial Constitution and sovereignty of the Emperor, and operated with the government's approval. Its supporters were conservative classes such as samurai, Shinto priests, Buddhist monks and Chinese classical literature scholars. The party was dissolved in 1883 because the government took a transcendentalist stance that rejected political parties even under a constitutional government. → Related articleFukuchi Sakurachi Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
