Jean Grolier (1479-1565), a book lover who is by no means a famous figure in French history but who is indispensable in the history of book craft, was stationed in Milan as a treasurer of the French army and government from 1510 to the 1520s, and commissioned the creation of many books famous for their “Grolier binding”. There are several styles, but the best known is a binding made of brown calfskin or morocco leather with a geometric “crossed tape pattern” and small flowers embossed in gold leaf, with the title in the central space and the inscription “IO. GROLIERII ET AMICORVM” at the bottom. …

...He was also the first to advocate a modern library system centered on the preservation and management of ancient documents, and in 1556 he petitioned Queen Mary to preserve the collection of manuscripts that were being destroyed during the civil war. Although this petition was not realized, Dee himself collected 4,000 books on his own, building an unprecedented private library that exceeded the approximately 3,000 books of Jean Grolier, which was said to be the largest in Europe at the time, and was later added to the collection of the Ashmolean Museum. Among the books were many manuscripts by R. Bacon, and it is said that F. Bacon came into contact with the ideas of the philosopher who had the same surname as him through Dee. ...
