...On the other hand, Caravaggio, a native of Lombardy who trained in Milan, moved to Rome around 1590 and achieved great success with his religious paintings, characterized by realism and a chiaroscuro style. The influence of these two painters overwhelmed the late Mannerism of Zuccaro and others, ushering in a new era. From the school of Caravaggio came Gentileschi, Carlo Saraceni (1579-1620), Bartolomeo Manfredi (c. 1587-1620/21), Orazio Borgianni (c. 1578-1616), and other painters with powerful chiaroscuro styles. In addition, in the early 17th century in Rome, there were such painters as Terbrüggen, van Honthorst, and Dirck van Baburen (c. 1595-1624) from the Netherlands, Elsheimer from Germany, Valentin de Boulogne from France, Bouet (who was a compromiser with the Bolognese school), and the Dutchman Pieter van Laer, leader of the so-called Bambocchianti school of genre painting from the north. The Baroque period began with the appearance of the great master Bernini, who was trusted by Pope Urban VIII (reigned 1623-44).

From [Bambochianti]

...A general term for genre painters, mainly from the north, who were active in Rome in the first half of the 17th century. The name is based on the fact that the representative Dutch painter Pieter van Laer (c. 1599-c. 1642) was called Bamboccio (meaning "funny doll") in Italy because of his physical disability. Van Laer, who moved to Rome around 1625, assimilated the influence of Caravaggio and developed a unique genre on the border between genre and landscape painting, which focuses on the daily life of ordinary people in the city of Rome and the surrounding countryside. He became a leading figure in the community of northern painters studying in the city, known as Bentvogel (Dutch for "flock of birds"). He produced many followers, including J. Miel, J. Lingelbach, M. Sweets, and M. Cerquozzi. ...
