A general term for protozoa of the family Vorticelladae in the class Dictyota of the subphylum Ciliata. Most species live on trees, stones, and duckweed roots in ponds and ditches, but some are marine. Vorticella nebulifera lives in ponds and other places, and when many individuals attach to other objects they form a grayish-white mass. The body is inverted bell-shaped and 100 to 200 μm long, and a stalk 4 to 5 times longer than the body length grows from the bottom and attaches to other objects. Cilia are arranged in a ring at the front end of the body, which serve to catch food. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
