A style of Kabuki and Ningyo-Joruri. Uwanari means second wife, and by extension it has come to mean jealousy. The practice of a divorced first wife gathering women from relatives and acquaintances to break into the house of the second wife (uwanari) was practiced until the early Edo period. Although the name is the same, the Kabuki and Ningyo-Joruri Uwanarimono is not a direct adaptation of this play, but refers mainly to a style of performance depicting jealousy caused by vengeful spirits. In Kabuki, it is said to have first been performed in Edo in March 1699 (Genroku 12) in the Edo Nakamuraza Theater's Isshin Gokaitama, the premiere of the Kabuki Juhachiban Uwanari, but this is merely the oldest record of a role of this style being played by the Ichikawa Danjūrō family.
