An enzyme that joins gaps in one strand of double-stranded DNA. It was discovered in 1967 in Escherichia coli by M. Gellert and his colleagues from the United States. Also called DNA ligase, it joins the 3'-OH end and 5'-phosphate end of a DNA strand with a phosphodiester bond. It is thought to be found in all cells and is essential for DNA replication, repair, and recombination. In DNA replication, short DNA strands are synthesized first, and then DNA ligase joins them together to form a long molecule.

2本鎖DNAの一方の鎖に入った切れ目をつなぐ酵素。1967年アメリカのジェラートM.Gellertらによって大腸菌から発見された。DNA連結酵素ともよばれ，DNA鎖の3′‐OH末端と5′‐リン酸末端をリン酸ジエステル結合で連結する。すべての細胞に含まれていると考えられており，DNAの複製，修復あるいは組換えなどに必須である。DNA複製においては，最初短いDNA鎖が合成され，DNAリガーゼによってそれらが互いにつながって長い分子となる。
