An enzyme that joins gaps in one strand of double-stranded DNA. It was discovered in 1967 in Escherichia coli by M. Gellert and his colleagues from the United States. Also called DNA ligase, it joins the 3'-OH end and 5'-phosphate end of a DNA strand with a phosphodiester bond. It is thought to be found in all cells and is essential for DNA replication, repair, and recombination. In DNA replication, short DNA strands are synthesized first, and then DNA ligase joins them together to form a long molecule. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
