This refers to a phrase indicating the content or theme, or the name of a man or woman, written on two lines above the title (outer title) of a Joruri or Kabuki play or the title of a book. It is usually written as a couplet. Old examples in Joruri include "Chubei/Umekawa: Meido no Hikyaku" from 1711 (Shotoku 1) and "Father from China/Mother from Japan: Kokusenya Kassen" from 1715, and in Kabuki "Azai Geki/Kuro Kosode: Tsuwamono Gongen Soga" from 1701 (Genroku 14). In "Denki Sakusho," which describes kabuki from the end of the Edo period, it is written that "Kaku-gai-dai is written on the shoulder of the dai-gai-dai, and Wari-gai-dai is written to the side of the dai-gai-dai." Other works include "Tokai/Road Trip: Hizakurige" and "Beef Shop/Chat: Agura Nabe."
