He followed in the footsteps of his father, Genbei, who was brought up by Tsugaru Nobumasa, the lord of Hirosaki Domain from Wakasa (Fukui Prefecture). Around 1697, he studied under Seikai Tarozaemon of Edo, and independently invented karanuri lacquering, creating the prototype of Tsugaru lacquering. After Seikai's death in 1699, he took the name Seikai, and was later considered the founder of Tsugaru lacquering. He was born in Mutsu Hirosaki (Aomori Prefecture). His childhood name was Gentaro.
