Genbei Ikeda

Japanese: 池田源兵衛 - いけだげんべえ

?-? A lacquer artist from the mid-Edo period.
He followed in the footsteps of his father, Genbei, who was brought up by Tsugaru Nobumasa, the lord of Hirosaki Domain from Wakasa (Fukui Prefecture). Around 1697, he studied under Seikai Tarozaemon of Edo, and independently invented karanuri lacquering, creating the prototype of Tsugaru lacquering. After Seikai's death in 1699, he took the name Seikai, and was later considered the founder of Tsugaru lacquering. He was born in Mutsu Hirosaki (Aomori Prefecture). His childhood name was Gentaro.

若狭(福井県)から弘前(ひろさき)藩主津軽信政にまねかれた父源兵衛の跡をつぐ。元禄(げんろく)10年(1697)ごろ江戸の青海(せいかい)太郎左衛門にまなび,独自に唐塗(からぬり)を案出,津軽塗の原型をつくる。青海死後の享保(きょうほう)12年青海を名のり,のち津軽塗の創始者とされた。陸奥(むつ)弘前(青森県)出身。幼名は源太郎。
