Sublimation - Showa

Japanese: 昇華 - しょうか
Sublimation - Showa
〘noun〙① When a solid becomes gas directly without becoming liquid. It also refers to a gas becoming solid again. At room temperature, it is found in dry ice, camphor, etc. *From Shamitsu Kaisoku (1837-47), "Sulfur is <omitted>. When heated in a covered container, it sublimates at 560 degrees." ② The unconscious conversion of lower-level desires (sexual energy) into higher-level artistic or religious activities. *Modern View of Love (1922), from <Kuriyakawa Hakuson>, 4: "The psychology of all such purifying transferences is <omitted>, and scholars may give it a name, perhaps even calling it sublimation." ③ When things are elevated to a more noble level, or become more universal or abstract. *Don Quixote (1944), from <Nakamura Mitsuo>, 2: "The humor in all first-rate comedies is always sublimated to this extent."
