Horned frog - Horned frog (English spelling)

Japanese: ツノガエル(角蛙) - ツノガエル（英語表記）horned frog

A general term for frogs belonging to the genus Ceratophrys in the family Leptinidae that have horn-like protrusions above the eyes. About 10 species are distributed in South America, including Colombia, Brazil, and Uruguay. They are about 10 cm long, with the smallest species being the Günther's Horned Frog C. appendiculata at just over 3 cm, and the largest being the Amazon Horned Frog C. cornuta at just over 20 cm. Their body colors are striking yellow, green, and red with black patterns, which serve as protective coloring in their habitat.

眼の上に角状突起をもつユビナガガエル科ツノガエル属Ceratophrysに属するカエルの総称。10種ほどが南アメリカのコロンビア，ブラジル，ウルグアイなどに分布している。体長10cmほどで，小さい種はギュンターツノガエルC.appendiculataの3cm余り，大きな種はアマゾンツノガエルC.cornutaの20cm余り。体色は黄色，緑色，赤色の目だつ色彩に黒い模様があるが，生息地ではこれが保護色となっている。
