A city in southern Hyogo Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1919. The central city faces the Akashi Strait, and in the Edo period it developed as a castle town of the Ogasawara clan with 100,000 koku of rice, and as a post town on the Sanyo Road. Before the war, the aircraft and steel industries developed, but suffered great damage during the war. After the war, the manufacture of agricultural and industrial equipment became popular, and heavy industry moved in as part of the Harima coastal industrial zone. Nori farming is also popular along the coast in the winter. Residential development has been remarkable as the area is within commuting distance of Osaka and Kobe. Akashi Park, the remains of Akashi Castle, the Japan Standard Time Meridian (135° East longitude) sign, and the Astronomical Science Museum are located here. A ferry boat connects the city to Awaji Island, and the city is served by the Sanyo Main Line, Shinkansen, Sanyo Electric Railway, and Akashi-Hime Highway. This is where the Akashi Man fossils were discovered. The January 1995 Southern Hyogo Prefecture earthquake killed eight people and destroyed or burned down 5,590 houses. The area is 49.42 km2 . The population was 290,959 (2010). → Related topics Akashi Domain | Kano Domain Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
