…His films, such as “A Land Without Bread” (1932), “Viridiana” (1961) and “La Tristana” (1969), are indispensable works in the history of Spanish cinema. The pioneer of Spanish cinema is the cameraman and animator Segundo de Chomón (1871-1929), who is also famous for his cinematography on the Italian historical epic “Cabiria” (1913). However, Spanish films first attracted international attention in the 1950s, when works by Louis Garcia Berlanga (Welcome Mr. Marshall, 1952) and Juan Antonio Bardem (A Frightful Encounter, 1955), both of whom were influenced by Italian neorealism, won awards at the Cannes Film Festival. Expectations for a new Spanish film grew, but due to the strict censorship of the Franco regime, no great progress was made, and it was only in the late 1960s that "true" Spanish films such as Carlos Saura (Peppermint Frappe, 1967, Carmen, 1983), who was appointed as Bunuel's successor, and Victor Erice (The Beehive, 1973, El Sur, 1983) began to appear.
