Bando Hikosaburo

Kabuki actor. The first generation was a famous actor from the Kyoho to Kan'en period (1716-1751), and there are now eight generations of Kabuki actors.

First World

(1693-1751) was an actor from Kamigata, but spent his prime as an actor in Edo, where he became a great actor on a par with Ichikawa Danjūrō ​​II and Sawamura Sojūrō I. He excelled in both factual and martial arts plays. The second (1741-68) was the son of the first, but died young.

III

(1754-1828) The third son of Ichimura Uzaemon VIII. In 1770 (Meiwa 7), he took the stage name of Ichimura III. After that, he made a name for himself as a leading actor in Edo, and was praised as a master of harmony throughout the three capitals. His roles as Yuranosuke in "Chushingura" and Kanshojo in "Sugawara" were said to be unrivaled. He retired in November 1813 (Bunka 10).

IV

(1800-1873) Son of Fukuchi Mohei, a bookkeeper at the Ichimura Theatre. He became the fourth head of the Ichimura family in 1816 (Bunka 13). He was a great leading actor in the late Edo period, and in 1856 (Ansei 3) he changed his name to Bandō Kamezō and performed on stage until the beginning of the Meiji era.

5th

(1832-1877) Adopted son of the 4th. In 1856 he took the stage name of the 5th from Bando Takesaburo. He was good looking, had a good voice and good delivery of lines, and was very refined. He played all kinds of roles, including leading roles, villain roles, and female roles, but he excelled in period dramas, and many of the plays he created have been passed down to the present day through the 5th Onoe Kikugoro.

VI

(1886-1938) The second son of the 5th Onoe Kikugorou, the 6th Onoe Eizaburo, was adopted into the Bandō family and took the stage name of the 6th Onoe in 1915 (Taishō 4). He excelled in heavy roles in period dramas, such as Sanemori, Mitsuhide, Ikyu, and Wada Hyōe in "Omi Genji".

7th

(1916-2001) The eldest son of the 6th. In 1942 (Showa 17), he took on the stage name of the 7th Bando Shinsui. In 1955 (Showa 30), he took on the stage name of the 17th Ichimura Uzaemon.

(1943-) The eldest son of the 7th generation. In 1980, he took the stage name of the 8th generation Hikosaburo from the 2nd generation Bando Kamezo. He is a pioneer of refreshing diction.

歌舞伎(かぶき)俳優。享保(きょうほう)~寛延(かんえん)期(1716~51)の名優を初世とし、現在まで8世代を数える。

初世

(1693―1751)上方(かみがた)の俳優だったが、円熟期は江戸の俳優として過ごし、2世市川団十郎、初世沢村宗十郎(そうじゅうろう)らと肩を並べる名優となった。実事(じつごと)、武道事(ぶどうごと)に優れた。2世(1741―68)は初世の子だが、早逝(そうせい)。

3世

(1754―1828)8世市村羽左衛門(うざえもん)の三男。1770年(明和7)3世を襲名。以後、江戸の立役(たちやく)として名をあげ、三都を通じての和実(わじつ)の名人とたたえられるに至る。『忠臣蔵(ちゅうしんぐら)』の由良之助(ゆらのすけ)、『菅原(すがわら)』の菅丞相(かんしょうじょう)は無類の当り役といわれた。1813年(文化10)11月、引退した。

4世

(1800―73)市村座の帳元福地茂兵衛の子。1816年(文化13)市村亀三郎から4世となる。幕末期の立役の名優として活躍、56年(安政3)に坂東亀蔵と改名し、明治初年まで舞台に出た。

5世

(1832―77)4世の養子。1856年坂東竹三郎から5世を襲名。容姿に優れ、声、台詞(せりふ)回しともによく、品があった。立役・敵役(かたきやく)・女方(おんながた)など、あらゆる役柄をこなしたが、とくに時代物の型物(かたもの)に優れ、彼の創造した演出で、5世尾上菊五郎(おのえきくごろう)を経て現代に伝承するものが多い。

6世

(1886―1938)5世尾上菊五郎の次男、6世尾上栄三郎(えいざぶろう)が坂東家の養子になり、1915年(大正4)に6世を襲名。実盛(さねもり)、光秀(みつひで)、意休(いきゅう)、『近江源氏(おうみげんじ)』の和田兵衛など、時代物の重厚な役に当り役がある。

7世

(1916―2001)6世の長男。1942年(昭和17)7世坂東薪水(しんすい)から7世を襲名。さらに55年(昭和30)17世市村羽左衛門を襲名した。

(1943― )7世の長男。1980年2世坂東亀蔵から8世彦三郎を襲名。さわやかな口跡の立役である。
