…A strong-smelling medicinal plant native to southern Europe that was introduced to Japan in 1868 and is still rarely planted today (illustration). It grows to a height of 50-100 cm. The stem is green with a whitish tinge, woody at the bottom. The leaves are alternate, completely or deeply lobed 2-3 times, and 6-12 cm long. The lobes are oblong or spatula-shaped, with no or small serrations on the edges, and pale green or purple. In early summer, cymes appear at the ends of the branches, and produce yellow flowers about 2 cm in diameter. …
