A village in Minamiazumi County, western Nagano Prefecture. Population 7,927 (1995). Located in the western Matsumoto Basin, the village is in the mountainous region on the eastern slopes of Mt. Chogatake and Mt. Jonen in the Hida Mountains, making up nearly 80% of the village's area. The settlement is on the alluvial fan of the Karasu River in the east. The Karasu River alluvial fan has been converted into rice paddy fields since early modern times with the construction of irrigation channels such as Oke Weir and Kanzaemon Weir. Agriculture is centered on rice cultivation, but in recent years there has been an increase in the cultivation of vegetables and flowers, and the raising of beef cattle. Susado, upstream of the Karasu River, is the trailhead for Mt. Jonen. A bus is available from Toyoshina Station on the JR Oito Line. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
