Tsugensou Magaki

Japanese:
Tsugensou Magaki

A humorous story published in 1787 (Tenmei 7). Written by Santo Tokyoden and illustrated by Santo Keiko. The title Sori means "big shop" in Yoshiwara, and the book depicts the language and customs of the large Yoshiwara store Matsubaya as a backdrop. The book reintroduces three characters from the yellow-covered Edo Raw Glamorous Birthstones published two years earlier, Enjiro, Kitazato Kinosuke, and Warui Shian, and begins with them discussing the latest trends and gossip in the pleasure quarters at Kinosuke's home. Eventually, the three of them go out together to Yoshiwara Matsudaya, where Enjiro is treated coldly by Osukawa, Shian gets drunk, and Kinosuke is treated well, depicting the world of pleasure for each of the three characters. Although the concept is already a type of sharebon, a refined aesthetic sensibility permeates the entire work, and the thorough realism in every detail could only have been possible from Kyoden, a frequenter of the pleasure quarters, making this a masterpiece that represents the pinnacle of the realistic tendency of sharebon.
