L'Aquila (English spelling)
L'Aquila is the capital of the Abruzzo region and the province of L'Aquila in central Italy. It is located 85 km northeast of Rome, in the Apennines, at an altitude of 720 m. It was founded around 1240 by Holy Roman Emperor Frederick II. It was later surrounded by a castle and at one time developed into the second largest city in the Kingdom of Naples. Today it is the commercial and administrative center of the agricultural region, producing radio parts, bricks, lace, chocolate, and other products, and is known as a summer resort. Although it has suffered frequent earthquakes, the Ribera Fountain (13th century), which has 99 aqueducts, the 15th-century Basilica of St. Bernardino, and a magnificent 16th-century castle remain within the castle. Population: 66,863 (1991 estimate).
