Austrian architect known for the Baroque Melk Abbey. He was a local architect who retained the traditional character of a master carpenter, and is said to have been devoted to the local community. He personally supervised the construction work, and at Melk Abbey he showed unique solutions to issues such as considering the site conditions and integrating the building into the landscape, and built an artistic culture unique to the region. バロック様式のメルク修道院で知られる，オーストリアの建築家。伝統的な棟梁の性格を残した土地に根ざした建築家で，地元社会に対して献身的だったとされる。工事の監督もみずから行い，メルク修道院では敷地条件の配慮や風景との一体化などに個性的な解決を示し，この地方固有の芸術文化を築いた。ほかにリンツ近郊のザンクト･フローリアン修道院などを残す。【杉本俊多】
