Sowing crop seeds in fields or seedbeds. Broadly speaking, there are row sowing, spot sowing, and broadcast sowing, and the timing is determined by the type of crop and the climatic conditions of the region in which it is grown. In the past, an agricultural calendar was established based on the activity of living things as the seasons changed, and seeds were sowed according to it. In the case of rice cultivation, there were taboos when sowing seeds, such as not letting strangers stay overnight, which would prevent the seedlings from growing, and not touching anything oily. After sowing, a ritual was held in which a tree branch was inserted into the water hole of the seedbed and burnt rice was offered to worship the rice god (→Minakuchi Festival).
