A Soto sect monk from the Northern and Southern Courts period. The founder of the Tsugen school. One of the Five Philosophers of Gasan. A native of Bungo (Oita Prefecture), he became a monk on Mount Hiei, and at the age of 31, he visited Gasan Joseki at Sojiji Temple in Noto (Ishikawa Prefecture) to receive the Dharma succession. After 1368 (Shohei 23, Oan 1), he repeatedly visited Sojiji Temple and established Myoko-an, one of the Five Temples, and became its founder. He was the founder of several temples, including Nagasawa-ji Temple in Tanba (Hyogo Prefecture), Ryusen-ji Temple in Echizen (Fukui Prefecture), Shoko-ji Temple in Kaga (Ishikawa Prefecture), and Sonei-ji Temple in Omi (Shiga Prefecture), all founded by Hosokawa Yoriyuki, and was known for his strict family tradition and the education he provided for his children. He passed away on May 5, 1391. He has one volume of Sayings and two volumes of Manroku.
