It occupies the north bank of the Usui River in the eastern part of Annaka City, Gunma Prefecture. It was once part of Usui County in Kozuke Province. In the Middle Ages, the area from the eastern part of Annaka City to the northwestern part of Takasaki City was called Itahana, and it is said that its center was around the location of Yawata Hachiman Shrine and Daisho Gokoku Temple in Yawata Town, Takasaki City, to the east of the current Itahana. Yawata Hachiman Shrine was also called Itahana Hachiman Shrine and Itahana Betsumiya Shrine in ancient times, with Daisho Gokoku being the head temple. In the Middle Ages, Itahana was a key location for land and water transportation, with the Tosando and Kamakura Kaido roads passing through it, connecting the Usui River and Karasu River to the Tone River, and it developed as a transportation settlement and lodging town. According to the "Gikeiki," Minamoto no Yoshitsune and his party heading for Oshu met the bandit Ise Saburo Yoshimori, who would later become his vassal, at Itahana. According to the "Soga Monogatari," Minamoto no Yoritomo moved his hunting grounds from Mihara in Shinano Province to Nasu in Shimotsuke Province via Itahana-no-yado. Itahana-no-yado was also a key point on the border between Koshu and Shinano, and military forces were often stationed there. In the early modern period, Itahana-yado on the Nakasendo was located at what is now Itahana. Takasu-watashi on the Usui River borders it to the west, and in 1791 there was one honjin and one wakihonjin, 43 inns, and 15 teahouses. Most of the inns employed female servants, and it was said to be the busiest of the seven inns on the Nakasendo. In 1852, there were 347 houses and 1,549 people. In 1889, it became Itahana-cho, and in 1955 it was annexed to Annaka-cho. Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
