An evergreen shrub or small tree of the Hamamelidaceae (APG classification: Hamamelidaceae) genus Hamamelid. It can reach a height of 10 meters. The trunk is gray-brown, and the young branches are densely covered with pale brown stellate hairs. The leaves are irregularly elliptical, 1.5-4 cm long, entire. Flowers bloom in May, clustered in a slightly head-like shape at the ends of branches that have grown this year, and are pale yellowish-white in color. The capsules are ovoid, about 7 mm long, and bipartite. They are distributed in an isolated area in Honshu (Shizuoka Prefecture, Ise Shrine, Mie Prefecture), Kyushu (Kumamoto Prefecture), Taiwan, southern China, and northeastern India. The name Hamamelid comes from the fact that the flowers resemble those of Hamamelids and the leaves are evergreen. There are three species in this genus.
