It is an animal of the order Marsupialia and family Cuscus. It is also called the wolf bear, the Fukuroguma, or the Aconite Fukuroguma. It is found in southeastern Australia. Its head and body length is 60-80cm, it weighs 4-15kg, and it has almost no tail. Its nose is large and exposed. It has five toes on both its front and back feet. The first and second toes on its front feet are opposable to the others and are suitable for gripping branches. The first toe on its back feet is short and thick, lacks a claw, and is opposable to the others, while the second and third toes are joined together. The female has a pouch on her abdomen that opens to the rear and has two papillae inside. Its body hair is dense and woolly, dark gray on the upper side and grayish white on the underside. Its cecum is the longest of any mammal, measuring 2.4m, about three times its body length. They are arboreal and live only in eucalyptus forests. They are nocturnal, resting in the forks of trees during the day and eating the leaves at night. Koalas only feed on about 35 of the 600 or so species of eucalyptus. They tend to live alone, are docile, and move slowly. The gestation period is about 35 days, and they usually give birth to one baby. The baby is born immature, with a head and body length of 1.7 to 1.9 centimeters, weighing less than 1 gram, and without hair. It is raised in a pouch for several months, and then carried on the mother's back for about six months. At the time of weaning, the baby puts its mouth to the mother's anus and eats a special soft feces made of partially digested eucalyptus leaves as baby food. It has a lifespan of 15 to 20 years. As of 1985, outside of Australia, they are kept at the San Diego Zoo and Los Angeles Zoo in the United States, and in Japan at Tama Zoo in Tokyo, Higashiyama Zoo and Botanical Gardens in Nagoya, and Hirakawa Zoo in Kagoshima. They came to Japan in October 1984. Their numbers decreased due to overhunting for fur, so they are now protected.
