A marine fish of the Argentidae family in the Salmoniformes order (illustration). It is found south of Sagami Bay on the Pacific coast and south of Sado on the Sea of Japan coast, and is called Nigisu or Migisu in Toyama Prefecture, Okigisu in Niigata, and Tongari in Wakayama. Its body shape resembles a whiting, with a slightly large mouth and relatively large eyes. The lower jaw protrudes slightly further than the upper jaw. There are no teeth on either the upper or lower jaw. The body is flexible and the scales are large and very easy to peel off. The fatty fin, typical of Salmoniformes, is attached behind the dorsal fin. As the name Okigisu suggests, it is a deep-sea fish, but it is often caught in the Sea of Japan because it gets very deep from the land.
