A calligrapher from the late Southern Song Dynasty in China. Born in Hezhou, Anhui Province. His pen name was Onbu and his pen name was Choryo. He was a government official, but was known throughout the country for his excellent calligraphy. Under the influence of his uncle Zhang Xiaoxiang, he studied Mi Fu and incorporated the brushwork of Chu Suiryo, creating a unique style of calligraphy that became popular among Zen monks. In Japan, Rankei Doryu, who came to Japan in 1246 (Kangen 4) during the Kamakura period and founded Kenchoji Temple, brought Zhang Jizhi's calligraphy style. As a result, many people sought out Zhang Jizhi's calligraphy through monks who had traveled to Song China, and his bold, powerful, and beautiful handwriting was revered among Zen monks thereafter. It is also noteworthy that Honami Koetsu, one of the Three Great Calligraphers of the Kan'ei period in the early Edo period, was influenced by this work. Among his calligraphy that remain in Japan are the famous handwritten works "Inscription on the Tomb of Li Bojia" (Fujii Yurinkan, Kyoto), "Diamond Sutra" (National Treasure, Chishaku-in, Kyoto), and the inscription "Hojo" on the plaque of Tofuku-ji Temple in Kyoto.
