Ogigai Shell Mound - Daigigai Shell Mound

A shell mound from the early to middle Jomon period is located in Oki-i, Toguhama Fortress, Shichigahama-cho, Miyagi-gun, Miyagi Prefecture. It is a large circular shell mound located on a tongue-shaped plateau facing Shiogama Bay, measuring approximately 500 meters by 300 meters. Thick layers of shells have been deposited around the edge of the plateau, and the remains of pit dwellings have been discovered inside. Excavations were carried out by Matsumoto Hikoshichiro, Hasebe Kotondo, Seino Kenji, and Yamauchi Sugao from the Taisho to early Showa periods. Yamauchi in particular carried out stratigraphic excavation surveys at six points within the shell mound, and classified the excavated pottery into Oki Type 1 to Oki Type 10. As a result, the pottery types of the early and middle Jomon periods in the southern Tohoku region were successfully established and dated, and the Okiori Shell Mound became famous throughout the country. It was designated a national historic site in 1968 (Showa 43), and is currently maintained as a historic site park, with excavated pottery and other items on display at the adjacent historical museum.

宮城県宮城郡七ヶ浜(しちがはま)町東宮浜要害(とうぐうはまようがい)大木囲にある縄文時代前期・中期の貝塚。塩釜(しおがま)湾に面する舌状台地上に立地する大規模な環状貝塚で、面積は約500メートル×300メートルある。貝層は台地の周辺に厚く堆積(たいせき)し、その内側で竪穴(たてあな)住居跡が発見されている。大正から昭和初年にかけて、松本彦七郎、長谷部言人(はせべことんど)、清野謙次、山内清男(すがお)らが発掘を行っている。とくに山内は、貝塚内の6地点で層位学的な発掘調査を実施し、出土土器を大木1式から大木10式まで分類した。それにより、東北地方南部の縄文前期・中期の土器型式の確立と編年に成功して、大木囲貝塚は全国的に有名になった。1968年（昭和43）国史跡に指定され、現在は史跡公園として整備され、隣接した歴史資料館に出土した土器などが展示されている。
