The Epic of Gilgamesh

The Epic of Gilgamesh
One of the most important works of Babylonian-Assyrian literature. A compilation of the stories of Gilgamesh, a famous hero of ancient Mesopotamia. Written in Akkadian, the text is mainly composed of 12 tablets excavated from the ruins of Ashurbanipal's library in Nineveh, with missing parts supplemented by many fragments found in Mesopotamia and Anatolia. The original Sumerian fragments were written in the first half of the 2nd millennium BC. The historical Gilgamesh was a real person who ruled Uruk in the first half of the 3rd millennium BC, and is said to have been a contemporary of Agga, the ruler of Kish. However, the poem does not contain any historical facts. The main theme of the story is that Gilgamesh wanders in search of immortality after his best friend Enkidu dies after suffering from a 12-day illness due to the wrath of the goddess Ishtar.
