A haiku poet from the early Edo period. Mr. Yamaguchi. His given name was Nobuaki. His other pen names were Raisetsu, Matsuko, Sosendo, and Renchi-o. His tea ceremony pen names were Konnichian and Kijitsuan. He was from Kai (Yamanashi Prefecture). His family was wealthy and ran a sake brewing business. At the age of 20, he handed over the family business to his younger brother and studied Chinese classics, waka poetry, calligraphy, haiku, tea ceremony, as well as Noh music, biwa, and incense appreciation in Edo and Kyoto. He was briefly in government service, but retired in 1679 (Enpo 7), first residing on the banks of Shinobazu Pond in Ueno, Edo, and later in Katsushika. He lived a life of detachment from the world and refinement, and had connections with Shomon haiku poets, as well as Hitomi Takehora and Toda Mosui. His first haiku work appeared in "Ise Odori," published in 1667 (Kanbun 7). During the Enpo period (1673-81), he worked in partnership with Basho as a Danrin haiku poet, and from the Tenna period (1681-84) onwards, he contributed to the establishment of the Sho school with his knowledge of Chinese classics. However, he did not write many haiku after that. His haiku style was simple and gentle. His school is called the Katsushika Sho school. He compiled and edited "Tokutoku no Kuawase" (1735), and his family anthologies include "Sodo Kashu" (two versions, the Koko edition and the Kyusho edition).
